What Are Some Therapy Methods for Doing “Cold Turkey” at Home From Heroin?
Question by T.K.: What are some therapy methods for doing “cold turkey” at home from heroin?
My fiance is trying to quit heroin use by going cold turkey. He has survived the first three days but now he can’t sleep. He’s going on three days without sleep. He has taken Tylenol 3, Xanex and some other meds to help him sleep but it doesn’t work. Can someone tell me of a way to help him? Any suggestions with sleeping aids that would work?

You can try tylenol PM,,that kind of helps. The best thing would be to get something like klonapine. He could get it at any clinic. It is really the only thing that is going to help and even with that sleep is going to be something he will battle for awhile. Here is a link you can look it up at.

If he is over 21 try a glass of wine or two
And new study showed that eating 5-10 cherries is as effective as many sleep medications. (fox news)
Tell him the first 3 days are the worse,,, it should start getting a little better soon. The worse of the being sick and the bone/muscle pain will only last a few more days .
The sleep problem will last for months. That’s the longest to deal with. It took me amost a year before I could sleep more than a few hours at a time. If he is having night sweats those will get better too.
I’ve been through withdrawls a few times. Those are what worked best for me. And tell him the hell isn’t over yet, but it will get better. Just not real soon as far as sleep goes. It’s just part of the price you pay for getting addict. And yes it is like hell.
Here is a link to a site that can at least help deal with many of the symptoms

If he can’t make it and uses, which is far more common than kicking without help, tell him to seek out a local methadone clinic and go on the 14 day detox program. So much of the opiate is out of his system that he could finish getting off without a lot of the pain, diarrea, being sick. And tell him it is the tough to kick,,, but it’s worth the pain to get off it. I’ve known several good people that just got caught up in it and it ruined their lives. Tell him he is doing the smartest thing he will ever do,,,,, it just doesn’t feel like it right now.
I can tell you a few other ideas if you want. Just e-mail me.
