Hey!! If it is working for you then i’d say stick with it. Different depression medications affect different neurotransmitters in the brain. Paxil is just one of several different antidepressants, personally i’m on zoloft and lithium. Paxil is obviously working very well for you. If you feel good then you should need to have your dosage altered or your medication changed. Different drugs affect different people in different ways so if this is working for you then don’t worry about what everyone else is on. You’ve found something that works and thats the main thing. I hope you feel better soon!! Good luck!! =)

I took 40 mg of Paxil for 7 years. I finally got off it about 1 year ago. THAT was the best move I made…getting off of it! It was a LONG HARD road to wean myself off of that “medicine”.
For me, Paxil was very addictive and I suffered many side effects. Yes, it did help me with depression because it turned me into an uncaring zombie. Now at least I can laugh, get mad, cry, etc. and really mean it.
If I missed one dose of that stuff I got violently sick, dizzy, and had the infamous Paxil “brain zaps”. If you don’t know what the “brain zaps” are then you will know soon enough. I experienced those zaps for months following stopping the drug.
It is amazing that doctors are just starting to admit the horrible side effects and withdrawal symptoms these drugs have. For years, they denied any such thing existed.
People who have been on Paxil long term and experienced the withdrawal stage often compare it to coming off of heroin. Google it yourself and find out all the horror stories the medical community ignores.
That is my thoughts about Paxil. Though of course, I am not saying that depression should be ignored and not treated. I have been a life long sufferer of depression. But, for me, there are many safer problem-free methods of treatment.
Google, read, and come to your own conclusions.
Good luck!
Edited to add: Just another person giving thumbs down and continuing to hide just how dangerous Paxil can be. Basically someone who has NEVER experienced what it is like to withdraw from Paxil. It doesn’t matter one bit if you slowly wean yourself off or stop cold turkey. You will get the withdrawal symptoms.
I also didn’t say Paxil is like Heroin. I said the withdrawal period can be compared to coming off of Heroin. Which is completely true because the withdrawal period is hell. A lot of people become unable to do anything for at least 2-3 weeks because of the symptoms. Wondering what the symptoms are? Here you go:
The paxil withdrawal symptoms include (but are not limited to):
Dizziness, which can be quite extreme at times.
Shocks, called the ‘zaps’; usually starting in the mouth or head, and extending out through the body.
Sensory sensitivity, especially sounds. Any noise can become a painful experience. Also, being under florescent lights can create discomfort. Touch, motion and even smell can be painful.
Nausea, very common with paxil withdrawal.
Confusion, memory problems, and difficulty with concentration.
Severe insomnia and/or nightmares, (now there’s a winning combination).
Extreme mood swings, such as intense grief and intense anger. Plan for this in advance!
Suicidal thoughts. If the urge to kill yourself becomes too strong and the argument becomes too logical, think of those who love you. Think of the thousands of others who have or who will go through a similar agony. Just don’t give up!
Headaches, sometimes quite severe.
Reduced motor skills, such as difficulty walking or talking.
Reduced or no appetite.
Intense fear of losing your sanity.
Depersonalization, where nothing seems real; it’s like you are outside your body.
Panic attacks, even if you’ve never had them before.
Sweating, sometimes profusely.
Blurred vision.
Muscle cramps and stomach cramps.
Diarrhea.
Chills/hot flashes, part of the ‘paxil-flu’.
Fatigue.
Painful, swollen eyes or mouth.
Fainting.
Hard to swallow.
Grinding teeth.
Numbness.
Itching.
Trembling.
Hallucinations.

I weaned myself off for over ONE YEAR. That didn’t help even a little bit.
Here is a source from actual people who have taken these drugs and not just some text book information:

“Paxil has the astonishingly non-unique effect of destroying your life while making you believe that your life is fine.”
“An entire decade I’ve spent on 20mg Paxil and have made several unsuccessful attempts at quitting over the years; the brain zaps always did me in and drove me insane. The nausea, the sweats, the vertigo, the rebound depression, and the intense rage were horrendous, but endless days of zapping always ended my struggle to get off, because taking the pill ended the zaps within an hour.”
“I suffered severe withdrawal from Paxil that hit me like a ton of bricks, I got dizzy, felt detached from reality, had the bad “electric shocks” and felt suicidal.”
“I have spent, literally, years trying to get off this drug, only to resume taking it when the side-effects of withdrawal have become too great.”
