It’s just a strange thing to say.
Why not….. I quit – mild goose.

The term has been around for ages it seems. “Let’s talk turkey” probably stems from the turkey gobble sounds themselves. And some say “cold turkey” was next.
Some think “cold turkey” came about because of the comparison between drug withdrawal and the dead bird.

If no one knew it before, John Lennon made “Cold Turkey” famous in 1969 as the title of his song about his own withdrawal from a short term addiction to heroin.
