Why Do People Not Like the Southern Accents?

Question by mookshow11: Why do people not like the Southern accents?
I say Southern accents- because there are many different types and dialects in the South, not just one. I always thought a soft southern drawl was actually a mark of refinement. But many people think it sounds stupid, or even uneducated. I personally think Northern accents -esp NY, Boston, and Philadelphia, sound far worse. Southern used to be considered more polite. Is there a reason perceptions about it changed?
Virginia Tidewater and some Georgia accents were actually considered more Upper Class.
