Gentle Leaders for Dogs?

Question by Caitlin: gentle leaders for dogs?
I have a 60 lb. Dalmation/Lab mix. We recently started using the Halti Gentle Leader with her. she did great at first, walks we’re awesome.. but now she just randomly stops during walks and freezes. We have tried so many things to get her to move again, but its so difficult. I literally have to push her to go again. She doesn’t want to go for walks anymore and isn’t excited by the Gentle Leader. She hates it. I tried to get her acclimated to it by giving her treats and letter her sniff it at first, but i don’t think I did enough. Any suggestions? Or reasons as to why she is stopping on walks?

Thanks

It took my Golden Retriever like 4 months to get used to his haltie. It might just take more time and more treats and praise. Go on small easy walks, lots of praise, lots of treats for the correct behavior.

BTW, my Golden was never happy to wear his haltie, but enough times using it, he was trained enough to walk very gentle on his normal collar, didnt pull anymore.

I have personally never been a fan of these leads, but to each their own.

Try walking her on a regular leash, without having her wear the halti to see how she does. Bring it along with you if you feel necessary. Keep in mind that the halti, like other training tools, are not a permanent solution, and should only be used on a temporary basis. Take her for a trial walk without the halti. Past that, I’m absolutely no help, as I’ve never had any success with these things myself. Sorry, and I wish you the best of luck with her!
