How Do “Head Collars” for Puppies and Dogs Work?
Question by vikky b: How do “Head Collars” for puppies and dogs work?
I am having difficulty training my border collie pup to do what he is told on the leash and not pull constantly. I have heard that a Head Collar is the best way to fix this. Could anyone tell me good or bad experiences with it and how it is supposed to work? Mainly if you have used it and what you think of it. Thanks !
Haha, to the third answer down, I know you haven’t read up on your facts, and don’t have a dog yourself. If you do, I’m surprised. I have read in many books that it is worthwhile if you are having difficulties, and a few people have told me. Just no-one has told me either why it is good, or how they actually work, just it helped them along their way.
For reference, if I knew it hurt them in any way, then I would not use it. For example, I don’t agree with shock collars at all.

They work because when the dog pulls then it’s head turns round back to you.
They do work but …………….
You have to be careful that the dog doesn’t learn to pull against it the other way, and more seriously that the dog doesn’t go to charge off as it’s head would jolt round severely which can cause a serious neck problem.
That said then that is rare, and they are meant to be for a training aid only.
Worth trying for sure.
In UK there are several on the market such as gentle leader, halti, cannycollar – and also the nicest but most expensive dogmatic which comes in leather and doesn’t slip on the nose of the dog.
