Why Do People Say Hitting Your Dog Is Not Effective?

Question by Ty: Why do people say hitting your dog is not effective?
So, all this “old school” techniques, that have been around for decades all of a sudden are not effective. Much like spanking your kids has become child abuse, now this too, is outdated. But not effective? I have to disagree. It may not be the most, “humane” way of doing it but can you honestly tell me, it doesn’t work? I would agree if I had only had 1 dog in my life and it worked for him then you might say, “every dog is different, it worked for that one dog but the general rule is…” but I’ve had many many dogs over the years. This technique worked with all of them, I’m not saying beat the crap out of the dog for peeing in front of you, but “time-out”‘s have never been my forte. I have never had trouble with my dogs using the old newspaper techniques, or rubbing their nose in their urine when they pee inside the house. Most of my dogs each had a couple accidents in the house 3 at most before they figured they shouldn’t pee in my house.
Enter new training era:
Wife gets a little (and I mean little!) chihuahua, she gives it time outs, never lays a finger on the dog, never rubs her nose in it, never smacks it or anything. How many times has she peed on the carpet? About 3 times a day… How many times has my husky? Once… 12 years ago. She swears by the “new-school” techniques but I find them to be rather… ineffective?
Look, I’m not advocating for animal cruelty, but I do believe today’s society over-hypes things a lot. My dogs have been corrected old-style, and are loyal, good, loving dogs who never turned out to be aggressive or anything so commonly connected to that kind of training; if anything, they are better behaved than most dogs I know.
I don’t know how a dog’s brain works. But I can tell you, my dogs are not afraid of peeing, they simply pee where they are supposed to.
