Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
There are many methods of getting addicts off opiates, such as rapid detox or going cold turkey, but with the withdrawal symptoms, none of these methods is a comfortable air balloon ride. It is difficult, but it's not impossible; otherwise, I wouldn't …

Other Than Releasing Chemicals Such as Dopamine Into the Body, What Else Do Drugs Do?

Question by Bryan: Other than releasing chemicals such as dopamine into the body, what else do drugs do?
Dopamine is the pleasure hormone, but drugs do more than just give pleasure. Cannabis, for increase, relaxes muscles and relieves nausea, while morphine kills pain. Both drugs interact with neurons to release more dopamine, but the two drugs have different properties.

Drs Opinion of Difference Between Physical and Psychological Dependence?

Question by Laura: drs opinion of difference between physical and psychological dependence?

Best answer:

Answer by Honor
Physical dependence is where your body actually requires whatever drug to function properly whereas psychological dependence is where your body actually doesn’t need it to function but your brain has convinced itself it does.

This difference is important especially in terms of detox of drug addicts because if there is a physical addiction, death can occur if a user tries to quit “cold turkey” (giving his or her body no time to adjust functioning without the drug). Heroin is a common example of a drug that is both physically and psychologically addicting.

It’s not that he was switched too early, he was started too late. Contact the prescriber immediately. He’ll probably increase the dose for a short period of time. Also make sure he’s dissolving the tablet under the tongue. If he’s swallowing the pill, it’s inactivated by the liver in what’s called the “first-pass effect.”

Addendum

Nalxone when taken orally has absolutely no pharmacological activity. It is only active if injected. It does not survive the liver’s “first pass effect.” I’ve seen patient need as much as 24mg the first few days. Subutex would be an option, too.
