the exact date/year is unknown but it means you have had your fill and dont want it anymore. specifically it is from the thanksgiving holiday after you have stuffed yourself with turkey and the next day all that is in the fridge is cold turkey and you cant even look at it. so when people say cold turkey they mean thats it they have had enough.

Of course, the term ‘cold turkey’ in the literal ‘cold meat’ sense appears many times in recipes – ‘cold turkey salad’ etc. Neither of the meanings above appear to have any allusory link back to that.

I know it’s horrible to say, but we have worse problems than drug addicts. Plus, until the addict wants a change, you can’t change them.
