Surprisingly the rate of addicts admitted to substance abuse and addiction treatment remained steady throughout the country, dramatic shifts of treatment admissions by region are of concerned to health officials. From 1998-2008 there were 770 addiction treatment admissions for every 100,000 people in United States. Alcohol, which is the primary drug of abuse, declined 15 percent but for the North Center western states remained the same.
While alcohol treatment admissions were declined treatment admissions for illicit drug abuse and addiction treatment were rising. Treatment admissions in every region showed increases for marijuana having risen 30 percent across the board. This aligns with more and more states legalizing marijuana during this time.
Heroin Addiction: Promising New Treatment for Heroin Dependency
There is news of a promising new treatment using naltrexone implants for heroin dependency. Researchers from Norway believe this development will have major implications for people struggling with an addiction to heroin.
The new treatment is geared toward people who want to beat their heroin addiction without using other addictive substances. The Norwegian researchers used naltrexone, which works by completely blocking the effect of heroin in the body. This in turn reduces the chances of overdose, physical dependency and other drug cravings.
“This blockage effect induces a feeling of calm and allows the patients to escape from their heroin addiction and stressful, drug-dependent lives. They are able to concentrate on getting a new start,” said Nikolaj Kunoe, who led the research at the Norwegian Centre for Addiction Research at the University of Oslo.

Heroin and Codeine belong to a group of drugs called Opiates. Opiates are inherited from the opium poppy. The people who took Codeine became addicted to it, this was the major problem. At the end of the nineteenth century, a German scientist changed the molecules of Codeine, in order to produce a new drug, like codeine, it would relieve pain but that, unlike codeine, would not be addictive. This new drug was named as heroin. By the 1920s, heroin had become the most widely abused of the opiates.
Heroin Addiction: Methadone: Drug Treatment or Just Another Addiction?
Drug addiction to Opiates (Oxycontin, Vicodin, Heroin, etc) is one of the hardest to overcome. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s Fact Sheet on methadone, “Methadone is a rigorously, well-tested medication that is safe and efficacious for the treatment of narcotic withdrawal and dependence.”
