Heroin Addiction: Suboxone Treatment
Suboxone is a controlled substance prescribed for treatment of opiate withdrawal. It is given mostly to heroin addicts and people addicted to opiate painkillers to curb their cravings for the drug.
Suboxone is a specially formulated type of opiate in that it does not cause the “high” associated with street drug use of heroin, but by binding opiate receptors in the brain. By binding the receptors in the brain, suboxone cuts the strong cravings addicts feel when they desire heroin. It also keeps the drug addicted person from feeling any opiate drugs should they decide to use again. in my opinion this type of suboxone detox for any opiate drug addiction is great.
Suboxone is only prescribed by physicians who have taken a special course in prescribing this drug and how it works. These doctors are also only allowed to treat up to a certain number of addicts at any given time. It is also highly recommended that the addicts particapation in suboxone treatment attend some type of behavioral therapy as well. It is possible to cut cravings, but opiate addicts, in addition, need to change their lifestyles, in most cases. A great way to do this would be in Narcotics Anyonymous. The best thing about this is that its free an one can find meetings world wide. Many addicts owe their lives to the program of N. A. The patient is told not to share with others as it will not cause an opiate high.
The doctors prescribing suboxone treatment are only allowed to prescribe a two week supply at a time to a patient and then the patient is required to return to see the doctor for follow up. The goal is to wean down the dosage slowly and have the patient get off of the medication eventually. Sometimes, depending on the patient, it can require a year or more of treatment. I have known people who have been on it for a couple of years but it is expensive but on the other hand you may want to think about what your addiction was costing you each day. If you are anything like me the cost of suboxone is just a drop in the bucket compared to when I was in full blown drug addictoin.
