Question by Andarin: How long should you wait to tell a potential love interest that you used to be a drug addict?
I’ve been talking to a guy on-line that really seems to like me and he said that he’s never done drugs.
I used to be a heroin addict, for 6 months, 2 years ago. I put myself into a hard-core program and have been clean for 2 years.
I’m wondering how long I should wait to tell him this. I am fortunate to have no health issues as I have been tested multiple times but its still info that someone would probably want to know.
I don’t know how to break it to him.
I got involved with drugs when my fiance (at the time) introduced me to them when I lost my parents, my grandfather and a very close friend all very suddenly.

Andrian, FIRST CONGRATULATIONS for being clean & sober for 2 yrs. now!! I KNOW what it’s like to have the “disease” of addiction as I’m a 25 yr. sober alcoholic. I worked AA as I KNEW my very life depended on it & have an attitude of gratitude today for that no longer being a part of my life today. You too can say the SAME thing. That was your past, we’re both now living in our futures. I no longer even think of alcohol, it’s no longer a part of my life. I really wouldn’t mention it until you’re VERY SERIOUS into your relationship. As I said, I honestly don’t even think of it as it’s no longer a part of my life. Even when I worked before I retired, my best friends in work didn’t know about my alcoholism. I KNOW ALL about your addiction, had a very close friend with the same addiction as yours, KNOW how hard it was for you to overcome your addiction, that’s why I congratulate you for being able to overcome it. Yrs. ago I lost the love of my life due to your addiction!!! Lived with him for a whole yr. when he’d told me he once did it but no longer did. Found out from his job he’d started again for a very SHORT period of time, got with the wrong person & O.D.ed & broke my heart!!! So, honey, I’d wait until you feel you’re at the “serious stage” with him. That also will put even more time “under your belt” too. Do as you see/feel fit & see if the subject even comes up again…keep on keeping on, honey…:)
