They are both addictive drugs that create a dependence upon them, and initially make your life feel “ecstatically optimistic & fulfilled”, but in many cases actually have quite the opposite effect upon ones life, and the lives of ones loved ones.
Is “Intervention” the key to helping stop this Self-Abuse???

Speak for yourself. Religion has done a great many things, as it has done many bad things. Remember, you are speaking about:
-Christianity
-Buddhism
-Hinduism
-Bahai Faith, etc.
These religions and many more have done a lot for our human race
