Trillions Wasted on Wars, Drug Abuse and Health Costs

If you don’t think ignorance and apathy go a long way in creating self-inflicted problems you have another think coming. Many Americans and others were all about fighting terrorism after the events of 9/11 and possibly rightfully so. It might have been worth an investigation into origins of the information on the true causes of the attack, who was behind the attack, and why the Middle East countries hate the United States. I personally think those that stand to profit from the resources consumed and materials needed to keep a war going are mostly behind it.

That moves onto drugs and drugs companies. Every single drug that we have now was first created by a pharmaceutical that either created the drug without medicinal purposes in mind, or possibly thought there may actually be some slight chance of medical benefit. Each and every drug that ails society today has been promoted as a public health benefit, yes even marijuana and alcohol.

Most Americans would find it hard to believe that they actually create these problems through greed and the desire to provide for their family. While many profit from stock portfolio’s, trying to profit from the very drugs that plaque society. Making the problem worse are the after effects that come from drug addiction and substance treatment costs. Not to mention crime, loss of productivity and healthcare costs. The Office of National Drug Control Policy report in 2007 that abuse of illicit drugs costs the US 0 billion.

Adding to that are the unknown costs of prescription drug addiction. Prescription drugs were not included and exceed addictions to methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin combined. Prescription drugs account for the biggest part of the drug abuse scene in this country. Additionally, prescription drug addiction contributes to heroin addiction.  Many teenagers, and adults for that matter, get hooked on prescription opiate painkiller drugs, and then turn to heroin because it easier to obtain.  Millions of today’s children are prescribed drugs like Ritalin, Adderrall and Dexedrine and later become addicted to methamphetamine or cocaine because they have similar qualities.

Many of the drugs prescribed to these adolescent go onto cause other health problems like weight gain, diabetes, and kidney and liver problems.  The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases state diabetes costs the United States 4 billion dollars each year. Contributing to that are those with drug problems and raised in families with drug problems are apt to not be as health conscious as those with more opportunities.
