Substance D, from the book and film “A Scanner Darkly” is emblematic of all addictive drugs, from medications such as morphine to illegal narcotics like heroin or cocaine.
The story was intended as a symbol of Philip K Dick’s loss of friends through addiction and his own suffering at the hands of drugs.
As we observe Arctor’s descent into a paranoid madness and eventually into narcotic psychosis, we observe the very pit of drug addiction.
