Asking Again Because I Kept Getting Weird Answers Before…?
Question by ? ? ???: Asking again because I kept getting weird answers before…?
I’m 26 weeks pregnant & I’ve been taking 3 5mg Oxycdone immediate release pills per day for exactly 3 weeks. The medication was prescibed by the nurse practitioner for a chronic pain issue that I had before my pregnancy & is being overseen by the attending high risk doctor at my OB’s office, so my doctor is aware that I’m taking this medication. They’ve been taking high precautions since I was put on this medication on April 9th (so 3 weeks ago today). I get frequent ultrasounds & I feel my baby move & she is very active. I know that Oxycodone is highly addictive, so I’m not sure if I should taper down from 3 pills to 2 a day then to 1 a day. I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t just stop taking them. I’ve been on much higher doses of Oxycodone (30mg 4-5 times a day) so I know what withdrawls can do to the body. I’m fully aware of all of the risks there are taking an opiate while pregnant, but I also agree with my doctor that the risks outweigh the benefits. Does anyone have any input without being rude? Like I said, I’m well aware of the risks & not taking the medication would put my baby at more risk than if I didn’t take the medicine.

A previous answer follows:
If they are similar to Vicodin, which is a combination of an opiate, and acetaminophen, then you can try weaning off slowly. See www.drugs.com and the label/insert about yours. Google: “pain killer addiction; resources; (your location)”
There are medications, like Naltrexone that may help.

“Keep coming back, it works if you work it!” This is what is chanted at the end of every meeting, but what if you have “worked it” and you still keep going back and getting drunk or loaded? Now, most people in the program will say things like, “Well, you must not have really done the steps right,” or “You didn’t go to enough meetings,” or “You didn’t pray to your Higher Power,” or “You know you did something wrong or else you would still be sober!” But what if the truth was that you did nothing “wrong,” that in reality you did not fail the Program, but rather the Program was just not a right fit for you, and in fact, it fails for most people? Hopefully even this little bit of knowledge would start to alleviate some of the guilt and shame that many carry due to numerous relapses and going in and out 12-step programs for many years.
