Why Do They Say Stop Smoking Cold Turkey?

Question by beggin?4?mercy: Why do they say stop smoking cold turkey?
My husband and I are planning to quit smoking after the holidays. We have heard that it is best to set a date, and go from there. I have read the many pamphlets and talked to doctors, so I know what “they” say to do, but I don’t understand one thing. Why would they say quit cold turkey? Any type of drug that your body is addicted to needs to slowly be taken out of your system. If you stop suddenly, you are going to have withdrawals, which, from experience I can say are much worse than the thought of what will happen if I didn’t quit. I don’t understand. Is there something different between nicotine addiction and pain medicine addiction? I used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day. I have cut back to a half of a pack. Next week, I am going to cut back to 5 cigarettes a day. I am hoping when the holidays are over, it will be easier for me to quit by doing this. What do you think? Will it hurt my success rate if I wean myself off of them or do they just say to stop cold turkey for another reason? I have had mutiple failed attempts at quitting, so I really want it to work this time. I was able to quit when I was pregnant for obvious reasons, but for some reason, I can’t quit without that large of a motivation. Yeah, yeah, my life depends on it, but if you don’t smoke, you don’t understand that you feel like you are dying when you first try to quit. Like I said earlier, I would choose dying of lung cancer over the withdrawal symptoms. So, how do I make it easier on myself?

Would You Agree That Salvation Has to Come From Within Yourself?

Question by Nemi Noo: Would you agree that salvation has to come from within yourself?
From my personal experience and my intuition on reflection, I can provide for you a sample of my past, that I feel even though it was a very negative experience, I had to go through it to understand the goals of the present and the future.
I used to be a heroin addict, it began by just using it to have fun.
After a very short period of time, my body became tolerant and I had to up my doses to achieve the same hit.
Heroin increases the uptake of a certain natural pain relief chemical in the body, endorphin, and it increases the number of receptors for them. When the body is deprived of heroin at this stage, the body can’t naturally match the amount of endorphin required and the body produces noradrenaline instead, this is what is supplied to the receptors looking for endorphin and adrenaline makes us sensitive and anxious.

Roughly How Long Does It Take to Be Completely “clean” if You Go Cold Turkey From a Heroin Addiction?

Question by Shazlet: Roughly how long does it take to be completely “clean” if you go cold turkey from a heroin addiction?
That is my main question but I also want to know what the addict will experience during this time, symptoms, side effect etc and is it possible for someone to die if they go “cold turkey” with no substitute drugs?

I would say a person is ‘clean’ after they get through the physical withdrawls.

Well, there are a lot of side effects from withdrawals Just depends on how bad the habit is. Irritabilty, emotional, mood swings (really bad), nausea, wanting to ‘crawl out of your skin’ feeling, anxiety, diarrea, no appetite, become pale, vomiting, extreme muscle aches, sometimes restless leg syndrome, pretty much hell.

It is possible to die, but I would think it would be because of dehydration. It really just depends on the habit.

How Long Do Tramadol Withdrawal Symptoms Last?

Question by m123: How long do tramadol withdrawal symptoms last?
I stopped using tramadol cold turkey (after heavy use for about a month) about 3 and a half weeks ago and I have no more actual “withdrawals” but I still feel severly depressed. I was not nearly this depressed before I started using tramadol. The week after I stopped I had thoughts of suicide, the depression was so bad. So how much longer is this depression supposed to last?

Anyone have any insight on this?

Tramadol is an opiate painkiller that is a derivative of heroin. It is a very difficult addiction to break, which is why so many people stay hooked. I’m not saying you are addicted, but it sounds like physically you were dependent upon the drug.
