Where Does the Phrase “Going Cold Turkey” Come From?

Question by Smile!: Where does the phrase “going cold turkey” come from?

Answer by Monty
“”Cold turkey” is an expression describing the actions of a person who gives up a habit or addiction all at once. That is, rather than gradually easing the process through reduction or by using replacement medication. Its supposed advantage is that by not actively using supplemental methods, the person avoids thinking about the habit and its temptation, and avoids further feeding the chemical addiction. The supposed disadvantages related to the abuse of drugs such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, and heroin are unbearable withdrawal symptoms from the total absence, which may cause tremendous stress on the heart and blood vessels and — in a worst case scenario — possible stroke or heart failure.

Stuff I Need to Know About “Suboxone”?

Question by JASON B: Stuff I need to know about “Suboxone”?
I have an appt. Mon(its Wed/night) to hopefully start w/ suboxone treatment. I have abused opiates for about 13 yrs. Been to rehab a couple of times to detox off of Oxy’s. Stayed clean a couple of months then right back on them. For the last 3 months, I have been strictly taking methadone(about 60 to 80 mgs/day). I reckon my question is… what should i tell my doctor? Should i stop using methadone tonight? i’ve read that you can’t start suboxone if you have methodone in your system. I was thinking maybe I could get by the next 4-5 days eating oxy’s again. Also, I need to know what kind of dosages I should tell him i’ve been taking b/c i’m worried to death that he isn’t going to start me out w/ a high enough dose to get me through my wd’s(spoken like a true addict). Lastly, It’s $ 750 for the first 3 days and then 125 a month after that. That’s alot of money I could spend on street methadone. IS IT WORTH IT?

Would It Be Possible to Rehabilitate Someone’s Addiction to Hard Drugs by Replacing It With Lesser Drugs?

Question by Quick Draw: Would it be possible to rehabilitate someone’s addiction to hard drugs by replacing it with lesser drugs?
Would it be possible to take someone’s addiction to something like crack or heroin, and slowly replace it with lower, less addictive drugs that could more easily be broken as an addiction? Not saying it’s a totally valid theory or something that could legitimately done by rehabilitation centers. But could it work?
Just so you know, this is all just speculation. I’m not trying to give my crack addicted friend a bunch of weed to replace his bad habits or anything psycho like that.

it could be possible, but doubtful. if your into hard drugs like that..best thing to do is go to rehab and quit cold turkey..by doing less addictive drugs they are still gettin a fix in some type of way but they will always wanna stray back to doing the hard drugs.

It is rare to die from opiate withdrawal, but not unheard of. It’s not nearly as common as death from alcohol, benzo, or barbiturate withdrawal.

Opiate withdrawal excites the CNS and raises blood pressure immensely. A person withdrawing from large amounts of opiates can have a heart attack, stroke, or seizure.
